What is ear wax?

The body naturally secretes Ear wax which can build up in the ears and cause problems with hearing, aching, dizziness and tinnitus. Often the body removes the wax itself, but in others it may need to be extracted by a health professional.

What causes ear wax build up?

Ear wax build up is caused by a number of reasons including:

  • Frequently using cotton ear buds to clean the ears
  • Ear plugs or hearing aids
  • Natural excessive body secretion
  • Ears producing hard or dry ear wax
  • Opening of the ear to the ear drum which can be caused by narrow or hair ear canals
  • Ageing can also be a reason due to ear wax drying as we get older
  • Growth spurs in the ear canal
What are the symptoms of ear wax build up?
Symptoms include ear ache, itchiness, ear infections, hearing loss, tinnitus and dizziness.
How long does it take?
It could take a matter of minutes or longer depending on the severity of the ear wax build up.

Ear Drop Application

A blocked ear can often be cleared by using ear drops alone which you can purchase from your local pharmacy. Make sure you carefully read through the instructions depending on which oil you apply. For example, almond oil, sodium bicarbonate, olive oil, and sodium chloride drops are usually applied for this reason. You’ll only need to pour a few drops into the blocked ear. When applying the ear drops, lie with the ear uppermost as possible. Allow 2 to 3 minutes to let the drops soak the earwax.

Apply the drops 2-3 times a day for 5 days before your appointment to maximise the effectiveness of the ear wax removal.
